Structural Shifts in Emerging Markets and Global Currency Volatility

Diverging economic paths in Africa, Asia, and Latin America are creating a complex landscape of commodity-driven growth and fragile consumer demand.

Structural Shifts in Emerging Markets and Global Currency Volatility

African Value-Add and Resource Nationalism

A structural transformation is emerging across the African continent as nations move from being mere exporters of raw materials toward becoming active participants in the global value chain. This shift is evidenced by significant changes in export compositions. For instance, Zimbabwe’s PGM concentrate exports fell by 52%, dropping from 154,000 tons in FY2025 to 73,500 tons, while its processed PGM semi-finished exports rose 71%, climbing from $914 million to $1.5 billion.

This trend toward domestic processing and "resource nationalism" is gaining momentum through various regulatory measures. Namibia implemented mineral export bans in 2023, and the DRC has moved toward managing cobalt quotas as of 2025. To improve investor predictability in the energy sector, Nigeria introduced the Deep Offshore Oil and Gas Projects Incentives (Tax Remission) Order, 2026.

While the German defense sector is seeing growth, it appears insufficient to bolster an economy facing potential recession. Consequently, the projected 4.1% African economic growth in 2026 and the expansion of clean-energy technology manufacturing are emerging as more significant drivers for long-term capital flows. The success of this transition depends on whether these nations can move beyond the primary products that accounted for 76.8% of African commodity exports in 2024.

Credit Pivots and Industrial Competitiveness in Asia

In China, a significant structural pivot is underway within the credit markets. Lending is shifting away from traditional sectors such as real estate and infrastructure—which saw their share of new loans plummet from over 60% to approximately 10% over the last decade—toward emerging industries including technology, green finance, and inclusive finance. This is supported by data showing that RMB loans increased by 1.038 trillion yuan in the first seven months of the year, while corporate new loan weighted average interest rates fell to slightly below 3% in July, a year-on-year decrease of approximately 0.2 percentage points.

However, this technological pivot faces global headwinds. Western industrial competitiveness is challenged by high costs, with building factories or R&D centers in the US and Europe costing at least 50% more than in other destinations.

In South Korea, the Won has shown strength, surging 9% against the USD since early July. This appreciation has occurred despite the Kospi index dropping 44% from its June peak to its July low. The Won's support appears linked to a narrowing interest rate gap following the Bank of Korea's first rate hike in over three years, alongside potential USD outflows driven by large-scale domestic AI infrastructure investments.

Fragility in Latin American Macro Stability

The macroeconomic outlook for several Latin American markets remains fragile, characterized by slow growth and critical resource shortages. In Argentina, economic growth is expanding at roughly 2% annually, a pace the Central Bank President noted is significantly slower than government expectations. This environment is further complicated by "post-traumatic stress" affecting investment decisions.

In Bolivia, productive sectors are struggling with a lack of solutions regarding shortages in both fuel and foreign exchange (divisas). Despite these macro headwinds, niche segments such as regional travel connectivity show signs of support. For example, new direct flight routes, such as the weekly service from Rosario, Argentina, to Natal, Brazil, for the 2027 summer season, indicate localized expansion.

Divergent Trends in Western Currencies and Commodities

Global currency markets are currently defined by divergence and shifting monetary expectations. In the US, consumer demand appears fragile, as retail sales fell 0.6% in July—the largest decline since May of last year. This included a 0.2% drop in nominal sales excluding autos and gas for the second consecutive month.

The USD and Yen are facing downward pressure. Federal Reserve rate hike expectations have shifted, with the CME FedWatch Tool pricing a September hike at a 32.5% probability, while markets assign a 67.5% chance to a quarter-point hike. Simultaneously, the Yen is experiencing its worst weekly performance since May, falling approximately 1% to 159.43 per dollar as previous intervention support fades.

In contrast, Gold has found significant support, rallying roughly 10% through August to touch a two-month high above $4,449. This is driven by the repricing of Fed expectations and a softening dollar. In the Eurozone, growth is no longer uniform; while the broader EU grew by 0.5% and the Eurozone by 0.4% in the second quarter, internal divergence is growing as Spain accelerates while Germany stagnates.

What to watch

  • Updates regarding cobalt and lithium export restrictions in the DRC and Zimbabwe.
  • The September 20, 2026, Berlin elections as a political indicator for the Eurozone.
  • The upcoming September Federal Reserve meeting and potential Bank of Japan policy moves.
